A distressing photograph of a Syrian father in one leg holding his newborn baby without upper or lower limbs has won the picture of the year at the 2021 Siena International Photo Awards.
And the Beta Pixel website reported that the photo was taken by Turkish photographer Mehmet Aslan in Reyhanli, in the Turkish province of Hatay, on the border with Syria.
The photo, titled "The Hardship of Life", depicts an emotional moment between a father and his son who was born without limbs due to a congenital disorder caused by the medications his mother had to take after she became sick with a nerve agent released during the war in Syria.
The SIPA competition is open to photographers from all over the world, and the competition received thousands of photos submitted by photographers from 163 countries, and the winning photos will be shown in Italy starting October 23, 2021 as part of the Siena Visual Arts Awards.
The winner of the "Photographer of the Year" award will be awarded with photography equipment worth 1,500 euros (about $1,745) and a small crystal statuette, the "Pangea Prize".
